How to work out hourly rate from Annual Salary
The standard formula used by employers in the UK to convert a yearly salary to an hourly rate is:
Annual Salary ÷ 52 Weeks ÷ Weekly Hours = Hourly Rate
Example: £30,000 Salary (37.5 hours/week)
- Step 1: £30,000 ÷ 52 = £576.92 (Weekly Wage)
- Step 2: £576.92 ÷ 37.5 = £15.38 per hour
Common Annual Salary to Hourly Rates (UK)
Based on a standard 37.5-hour working week, here is what common UK annual salaries look like as hourly wages:
- £21,000 a year = £10.77 per hour
- £25,000 a year = £12.82 per hour
- £30,000 a year = £15.38 per hour
- £40,000 a year = £20.51 per hour
- £50,000 a year = £25.64 per hour
Unpaid Overtime & Your Hourly Rate
If you are on an annual salary but work unpaid overtime, your actual hourly rate decreases. Use the calculator above to input your "Actual Hours Worked" (e.g., 45 hours instead of 37.5) to see how much your hourly wage drops when you work late.
