Important
Band 1 is closed to new entrants under Agenda for Change. New NHS starters are typically appointed at Band 2 or above. This page is for existing staff who remain on Band 1.
If you are currently on Band 1, you may still receive annual pay awards. However, like all NHS bands, your gross salary is not the same as your take-home pay. Deductions determine what actually reaches your bank account.

3. Estimated Band 1 take-home pay (monthly)
Typical monthly take-home range
- Band 1: ~£1,600 – £1,850 per month
These figures assume standard tax code and NHS pension contributions. For a personalised estimate, use: the NHS take-home calculator.
4. Why your net increase can be smaller than expected
- Pension deductions: reduce what you keep from the uplift.
- Income Tax and NI: apply to additional earnings.
- Other payroll deductions: can further reduce net pay.
5. Scotland vs England differences
Scotland has different income tax bands. The same gross salary can produce a different take-home outcome depending on where you pay income tax.
